Go Ahead, If You Dare.

I hereby throw down the gauntlet - The Monkees were a brilliant pop band.

Go ahead. Challenge me. You know I'm right.

Okay, I'll disagree with you...sort of. Rather, the music put out with the name of "Monkees" slapped on it was brilliant pop music, but the Monkees themselves were not a brilliant pop band. See the distinction?

i agree, if discussing the early days when they were a puppet band doing every popular songwriter's songs.

however, halfway through their career they went to the record label and threatened to disband and tell the press how the label was refusing to let them record their own songs. the label caved, and the result, in my opinion, were some of the best songs they ever did (and they could indeed play their own instruments extremely well). tracks like "auntie's municipal court" and "you just may be the one" bear this out.
